Artsmark: Time to Say YAAAAY!

Oct 8, 2018

This Artsmark Celebration Week it’s time to say congratulations to the 45 south west schools and education settings who have gained their Artsmark awards over the past year!

Artsmark is the creative quality standard for education settings accredited by Arts Council England. It provides a clear framework for teachers to plan, develop and evaluate arts, culture and creativity across the curriculum. It supports schools who believe every child should have the opportunity to create, compose, and perform, as well as to visit, experience, participate in and review extraordinary work. It helps unlock the potential of children and young people, develop character and talent, and increase knowledge and understanding.

At a time of concern about the results-driven narrow curriculum offer in schools and the marginalisation of many arts and creative subjects, it is hugely heartening to recognise the commitment so many south west schools have to ensuring a broad and balanced experience for their children in which arts and culture have an important place.

Between Celebration Week 2017 and Celebration Week 2018, this commitment to arts and culture has seen 20 south west schools gain the Silver Artsmark, 22 Gold and 3 the highest Platinum accolade. This brings the total south west awards to 76 in the 3 years since Artsmark’s relaunch. What’s more, over the past year 44 new settings have registered, increasing the south west Artsmark family to over 260 as more and more heads, governors and teachers recognise the value of the award in helping them shape and develop a rich curriculum for their children.

Reflecting on the achievements, Chief Executive of the Real Ideas Organisation (who deliver Artsmark in the south west) Lindsay Hall, commented, ‘As we look to the future for our children we know that increased automation will mean many once-steady jobs are replaced by machines. According to Nesta, the global innovation foundation, creative, technical and social skills will best prepare young people to be successful in this new world and, best of all, they state that Ofsted evidence has shown that arts and creative subjects are effective at teaching and developing these skills at primary and secondary levels.’

She added, ‘In recognition of the significant difference they are making to young people today and for their futures, everyone at the Real Ideas Organisation says a huge thank you to this year’s south west Artsmark awarded settings:’
