Applications are now open for this Artist Development Project from Saffron.  Saffron is a music tech initiative taking an intersectional approach to redressing the gender imbalance in the industry.


What is it?

The Artist Development Project is a 6 month programme for black women and non-binary music creators in South West England to take part in Saffron’s new Artist Development project. On an exciting programme of personal and professional development, Saffron aims to provide 6 participants with tools, opportunities and support to develop their music careers. The project centres around a paid commission from MSCTY, the leading global music-architecture agency, that invites musicians and recording artists to create tracks in response to locations in cities around the world.


The selected participants will receive: 

  • A paid commission from MSCTY to create a musical work in response to a Bristol location (£800)
  • Additional funding towards recording, production and development costs (£850)
  • Opportunity for release on Saffron Records
  • Regular 1-2-1 mentoring with an industry professional
  • Music career masterclasses
  • Media content creation and support
  • A 12-month Saffron Members subscription


You must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply to take part in the project:

  • You must be… A musical creative of some kind, such as a music producer, composer, lyricist, instrumentalist or vocalist.
  • You must be… A woman, non-binary person, or gender non-conforming.
  • You must be… Black or of Black heritage; eg. Black British, Black African or Black Caribbean, including those of mixed-Black heritage.
  • You must be… Age 18+. There is no maximum age limit
  • You must be… Currently living in South West England


The project is designed specifically to support Black women and non-binary producers and music makers based in Saffron’s home of South West England. The aim is to lay deeper foundations for better visibility, representation and financial benefit for Black music creators in our area.
