Waycroft Academy

Waycroft Academy, from Bristol, fought through staff changes to earn their Gold Artsmark accreditation, developing curriculum, pupil voice and the pupils’ leadership.

What difference has the Artsmark journey made in your school?

The Artsmark has raised the profile of the arts in school. It has helped us assess where we are in our development of the creative curriculum and arts in the wider school community. It has shown everyone that we value and support the arts as an important part of our lives.

Could you provide a quote from a member of staff about their experience of Artsmark?

“I hadn’t realised how the effect of the arts in our school has such a positive impact on the children’s well being, until we started on the Artsmark journey”

Could you provide a quote from a pupil about their experience of Artsmark or an event within it?

“I love being one of the new arts councillors. I have so many ideas that I want to talk about with everyone.”

What surprised you about your Artsmark journey?

That every child can shine in a different way in all the arts. That there will always be something for everyone.

What was your favourite part of Artsmark?

I enjoyed many of the practical things we did, such as organising a community art exhibition and helping children perform Shakespeare in a professional theatre in front of an audience.

If you had once piece of advice for an education setting that’s new to Artsmark what would it be?

Go for it! Involve as many people in it as you can, as they will enthuse each other about the journey. It’s hard work, but it is a very rewarding process.
